Matched subset for these second generation Capitol transition irons. Makers like Wilson commonly sold sets of less than 8 or 9 irons. Not many irons were needed in the wood shaft and later transition days of club design but then things changed with 7 1/2 and 8 1/2 irons, several wedges and jiggers, and so forth. In a few years some players were known to pack some 50 clubs (woods included). I doubt many caddies carried double in those days. Later, the USGA established club limit rules. These clubs are very good with only some front of sole dinging - on older public courses the turf was often rocky or worse. The uniformity of face punchings made the irons look a little better, as cosmetics improved marketing. Note the pinned heads and knurling at the hosel tops. Perfect ringed ferrules, and perfect chocolate tint transition steel shafts. Original perforated leather wrap grips excellent with all black caps and collars in place. 2 iron at 38 1/2". A marvelous set for the tradition seeking better player.
