Very nice 56 degree wedge with early wedge '99' designation. When club 'numbers' came into practice versus names like Mashie, Niblick, etc., most iron sets were numbered 1-9 where 9 was the putter. Additional clubs like a jigger were given # 33 and there were a few others to accomodate the new accounting. The '99' was basically a 9 iron/wedge - this wedge has a loft of 56 degrees, a typical sand wedge of today. The '99' faded from use in the mid 1930's but, as is always the case with quality club designers like Kenneth Smith and Stan Thompson, the nomenclature was used to the comfort level of that designer, often to preserve tradition. The basic stainless head design and grip suggest a 1940's club. Note the brass counterweight in the toe and weight adjustment hex screw in the sole. Perfect ferrule and good Stan Thompson steel shaft with partial band and very fine and soft Golf Pride Chervron grip with beautiful full grip collar, round out this superb and playable specimen. 35 1/4".
